Pixium Vision’s Bionic Vision Systems (BVS) are intended to partially replace the normal physiological function of the eye’s photoreceptor cells by electrically stimulating the nerve cells of the inner retina, which then transmit the visual information to the brain via the optic nerve.

Due to its construction, the retina can be artificially stimulated via different approaches:

  • Sub-retinal stimulation involves partially replacing the photoreceptor layer by an electrode array that aims to stimulates the bipolar cells that subsequently transmit signals through the retinal network in the inner retina. The approach enables a more physiological processing of the visual signal, as the electrodes replace the defective photoreceptors function and are closest to the bipolar cells.
